After 52 years in the business, it looks like Barbara Walters is finally ready to step off camera for good. An omg! source confirmed Thursday widespread reports that Walters, 83, is retiring in May 2014, leaving her post at "The View," as well as the various contributions she makes to ABC News. It remains to be seen whether she will fully retire or appear occasionally for special reports.
A rep for the chat show had no comment.
Walters is an icon in broadcast television. She's highly regarded as a glass-ceiling buster in the business. She served as the first female cohost of NBC's "Today" show, and later became the first female co-anchor of the "ABC Evening News."
She boasts countless one-on-one interview exclusives with world leaders like Margaret Thatcher, Vladimir Putin and Hugo Chavez, and celebs like Michael Jackson and Katherine Hepburn.
To honor the veteran newswoman and give her a proper sendoff, the network reportedly has a year-long deck of tributes and specials in the works.
Unfortunately, Walters' departure also leaves "The View" with two vacants seats. In addition to Walters, who created the program in 1997, original panelist Joy Behar will depart after the show's current season.
There have also been rumblings that Elizabeth Hasselbeck is looking to make an exit as well, but both she and the network issued denials.
