CELEBRITY NEWS--- 'I am Nollywood': Director's tale of Niger Delta struggle

Jeta Amata is a prominent Nigerian filmmaker from a family of movie stars. He is one of Nollywood's most popular film directors, hailing from a famous family of movie stars that have shaped Nigeria's entertainment industry for decades.
Yet Jeta Amata had other career plans while growing up.
"I wanted to be a pilot," says the award-winning filmmaker. "I was about six and I was intrigued with the fact that something could fly up there and that some man could control it; I wanted to control the plane."
But Amata's dreams to conquer the skies were put aside as his family genes kicked in. Instead, Amata went on to reach great heights with his feature films, winning international acclaim and carving out a career as one of Nigeria's most prominent directors.
For his latest film, "Black November," Amata broke new ground working with both Hollywood and Nollywood talent.
An impressive roster of American film stars, including Mickey Rourke, Kim Basinger, Vivica Foxx, Michael Madsen and Tom Sizemore, as well as musicians Akon and Wyclef Jean, is joined by famous Nigerian actors Hakeem Kae-Kazim and Enyinna Nwigwe.
Amata's family is also part of the star-studded cast. Along with Amata's father, Fred, the film stars his wife, Mbong Amata, as the female lead.
Spotlight on Niger Delta
"Black November" is a drama about Nigeria's Niger Delta region -- a part of Nigeria still struggling to overcome a past history of rebel violence. The area is the world's third-largest wetland but decades of oil drilling had turned it into one of the most oil-polluted places on Earth.
"For years now I've been wanting to make something on Niger Delta," says Amata. "I wrote three scripts over the past maybe eight years about the Niger Delta and as things kept escalating it became almost more difficult to make but I got to the point where I knew it just has to be now."
Amata, who grew up in the Niger Delta, titled his film "Black November" after the month when local environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa was killed.
What excites me about people's stories are the human parts of them.
Jeta Amata, film director
In 1995, Nigerian writer and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Saro-Wiwa was one of nine environmentalists arrested and executed by the then military regime. The news provoked international outrage and Nigeria was suspended from the British Commonwealth until 1999.
Veteran director reveals secrets of Nollywood's success
Many of the Delta protests led by Saro-Wiwa targeted oil giant Royal Dutch Shell, which was sued by families of the activists, who accused the company of complicity in the deaths. The company said it never advocated any act of violence against the activists and tried to persuade the government to grant clemency. In 2009, the company agreed to an out-of-court settlement with the families, paying them $15.5 million.
Amata, who had once met Saro-Wiwa through his father, says he was affected by the activist's death.
"I have always wanted to tell a part of his story," he says. "Most of the politics in his story I didn't want to get into. I wanted to get to the human part of his story. What excites me about people's stories are the human parts of them, not necessarily the politics. Even in 'Black November' I know I touch on politics a bit but I'm more concerned about the feelings of the people, about what they've been through and where they are going through."
Amata says his goal is for viewers to realize what people in the region have been through over the past few decades.
"We want the world to stand with us," he says. "We are not trying to fight the government, trying to fight the oil companies, no -- we are trying to repair what has been damaged," adds Amata. "We can change the Niger Delta of Nigeria."
Nigeria's booming film industry
If I make a couple of Hollywood films its not going to change who I am and where I come from.
Jeta Amata, film director
Nollywood, the term coined for Nigeria's mega film industry, has grown in recent years into a mighty movie-making machine, capturing audiences with its universal themes and arresting stories of urban culture.
The booming industry has been notorious for churning out over 1,000 films a year which often struggle with shoe-string budgets and low production values.
Amata, who is often praised for the high production values and strong narratives of his movies, says he initially disliked the Nollywood name, which sounded like "not-Hollywood."
Nollywood thriller campaigns for safer skies
Yet, today he passionately defends the industry, rejecting claims that his movies are not part of Nigeria's movie-making movement.
"If I make a couple of Hollywood films its not going to change who I am and where I come from," he says. "I built Nollywood with people out there," he adds. "I was one of the first few people to make films. I worked hard for the market. I learned like all the Nollywood directors how to pull a camera apart and how to put it together. I am not going to lose that title, never.
"I don't care what people say, or what they think, or how they say it is really not Nollywood, I am Nollywood."

CELEBRITY NEWS --lance-gross-talks-temptation-tyler-perry-and-why-we-should-give-kim-kardashians-performance-a-chance

Temptation
After some pretty good promotion and some very captivating trailers (“He’s going to take you straight to hell…”), I’m sure you know that Temptation was released yesterday, and everybody and their mothers will be in the movie theater watching it. While promoting the film, one of the film’s very fine stars, Lance Gross, opened up to the Huffington Post about all the early backlash the movie received (back when it was still called The Marriage Counselor) because of Perry’s choice to allow Kim Kardashian to be in it. But Gross says that while he can understand why people might be upset about her being in the movie, she actually did a great job so people should give her and her performance a chance before they talk crazy.
So what is the movie about? Clearly its center is the fight to resist the temptation to cheat. While no one would dare cheat on Gross in real life, his character of Brice doesn’t have the same luck:
“He’s a small town guy, very passionate about his career, on his way to becoming a pharmacist. And he’s just a very regular guy. He married his childhood sweetheart, “Judith,” played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell. Along the way, as far as his relationship, he becomes comfortable and stops doing the things that he used to do to make her feel special. And then she meets this guy and the temptation comes in. He shows her a whole new world that she’s just not used to. So I spend most of my time in the movie fighting for my marriage.”
He also discussed how Perry is also starting to target a wider audience with his films and what kind of director Perry is:
“It’s definitely different. Tyler has his thing. He appeals to a certain type of audience, but Tyler really targets the African-American, church going community. And actually, it’s really growing now. Tyler works very quickly, he knows what he wants and he executes. It’s like a good boot camp for an actor, because it’s just puts you on your “A-game.” It prepares you for other directors who tend to take their time. But it’s depends on who it is, because some directors work fast like Tyler Perry and some like to take their time and do 17 takes.”
As for Kim K…
“I’ve been working with Tyler since 2007 and he has a great business mind. He knows what he’s doing and he knows what he wants for his films. So I don’t really question his decisions in casting people. To Kim’s defense, she did a great job. The role that he gave her was well thought out. It was something that he believed she could execute. And I think she brought her “A-game.” I get what all the fuss was about, but at the end of the day you got to give people a chance. And I feel like she really proved herself.”
I guess we’ll see now won’t we

CELEBRITY --will-the-21-year-old-drama-end-janet-hubert-talks-what-really-caused-her-to-leave-fresh-prince-and-squashing-beef-with-will-smith

Janet and Will Smith
After thrusting herself back into the spotlight with a scathing open letter to Wendy Williams, Janet Hubert has a few more things she wants to get off her chest. In an interview with theGrio, she finally set the record straight for those who keep asking about why she had to leave The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, says that she would love to reunite with all the cast (even the replacement Vivian, Daphne Reid), why she wants to stop all the animosity between herself and Will Smith, and why she hopes the way he has treated her and others in the past won’t affect the legacy of his children. Eh, you read that right.
Hubert says the contract NBC expected her to take, which required her to do no work outside of the Fresh Prince and therefore would decrease her income was an outrageous one. And when they wanted her to go public and say that the contract was something she allegedly came up with, she said “Hell no.” Things went downhill from there:
“It was a negotiation that should have come back like most do. We were a very successful show and I felt like I was an integral part of that, and felt valuable, but you cannot feel valuable in Hollywood.”
How things between Hubert and Smith (and even Alfonso Ribeiro) got so ugly after her departure from the show:
“I think what happened, because the audience was so on my side at that time, that Will probably felt like he needed to go out, and he needed to tell a lot of lies. Alphonso went out to a college and told a lot of lies, but the problem is I have proof that a lot of that didn’t happen.”
Feud reports between Hubert and Smith beefed up once again when TMZ published a photo of the cast of the Fresh Prince meeting up and Hubert was not present. On what she wants to say to Will Smith:
“I would say to him, we need to heal this. You’ve done some things, you’ve said some things, that were totally untrue and you know that they were untrue. I’ve said some things that I probably should have never said. But you’ve never heard them come from my mouth. Especially the TMZ thing last Christmas; my Mom passed away. So there I was again in the media getting beaten up…and you get tired. I’m tired. Aren’t you tired Will?”
And she says that she feels for Smith’s children, because she sees how people attack them in the media. She goes on to explain why she hopes his past behavior won’t have a negative impact on the way people view his children:
“My heart breaks from some of the comments that people make about his children. And for the damage that you may have done to someone else, your children may suffer… for your legacy.”
Hmmm, for Hubert’s sake, I hope these two can mend things because 21 years is too long to hold so much anger in your heart. Plus, it’s just a tired conversation in general. How long ago was that sitcom!?

NEWS --30-year-old transient sought in kidnapping of 10-year-old Northridge girl

A 30-year-old transient with ties to the North Hollywood area is being sought as the sole suspect in connection with Wednesday's kidnapping of a 10-year-old Northridge girl from her home.
“We're here to announce a suspect in this case, somebody that we're seeking the public's help to find,” LAPD Chief of Detectives Kirk Albanese said Saturday. “What's really important is that if anyone sees this individual to call 9-1-1.”
The suspect, Tobias Dustin Summers, 30, is a parolee with prior convictions, including possession of explosives, dating back to 2001, when he turned 18 years old, according to police and court records.
Though police previously discussed a possible second suspect, Albanese said that “there is no other suspect in this crime.”
The girl was missing for more than 12 hours, however police have not said whether she was the victim of a sexual assault.
Police said the girl's mother woke to a noise about 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, checked on her daughter and discovered her missing. A child living nearby told his mother he heard a door slam about that time.
The girl later told police she was abducted by two men, put in

several vehicles and taken to a vacant home and a warehouse. She said they dropped her off at Kaiser Permanente's Woodland Hills Medical Center, and she was spotted shortly before 3 p.m. wandering shoeless around a Woodland Hills strip mall.
She had “facial bruising and lacerations,” police said. After being evaluated at a hospital, she went home to her family.
She described one of her abductors as a white man about 18 and didn't have a description of the other.
Police said they didn't know the motivation for the crime.
Summers was convicted in 2009 of petty theft with prior convictions and battery, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records. The battery conviction also involved an allegation of child annoyance, according to the LAPD.
He was convicted of grand theft in 2006 and petty theft with prior convictions in 2005, records show.
Summers also was convicted of grand theft in 2003.
In 2002, Summers was convicted of possessing explosives and receiving stolen property.
Summers' earliest listed criminal conviction was for driving without a license in 2001.
He also has been arrested on suspicion of crimes including kidnapping, robbery and auto theft, Albanese said.
“He is not a registered sex offender that we are aware of,” Albanese said.
According to Los Angeles County booking records, Summers was arrested Jan. 10 on suspicion of a felony by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department North Hollywood Division.
His parole was violated and he served nine days in jail before his release on Jan. 19, booking records show. Further details on the January arrest were not available.
Police described Summers as white, about 6 feet tall and 160 pounds. He has short-cropped blond hair and blue eyes, and has a tattoo.
As about 40 detectives continued investigating the case, “We have no information that the family knew this individual,” Albanese said.“We believe he removed the girl from her house.”
The FBI has been assisting the LAPD in the investigation, and is ready to offer its services if needed.
“Should he have left the state, we have the resources to take him into custody,” said Bill Lewis, assistant director of the FBI in Los Angeles.
The Daily News identified the girl in previous reports because police released her name when she was missing. But her name is not being reprinted at the request of police and her parents.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division tip line at 213-486-6890.

NEWS -- Sick Miami pimp forces 13-year-old runaway to tattoo his name on her eyelids: cops

Roman ‘Suave’ Thomas III and his female accomplice, Shanteria Sanders, reportedly charged johns up to $100 per hour to have sex with a teenaged runaway nicknamed ‘Sparkle.’ When the young girl threatened to leave, police say she was branded.

Roman “Suave” Thomas III and Shanteria Sanders face charges of human trafficking, false imprisonment, lewd and lascivious exhibition and delivery of a controlled substance to a child.

When a 13-year-old prostitute tried to leave her pimp, the Miami man forced her to tattoo his street name on her eyelids.
The teenager now has her torturer’s nickname, Suave, on her right eyelid. On her left eyelid, she was inked with the word House, suggesting that she belonged to him.
Suave, known formally as Roman Thomas III, was arrested last Monday by Miami police. The 26-year-old and a female accomplice, Shanteria Sanders, “compelled and coerced” the young girl into becoming a prostitute, giving her drugs to keep her obedient.
Nicknamed Sparkle, the teen ran away from a turbulent home. She met Thomas on March 12 at the USA Flea Market in Miami. One day later, he saw her again and convinced her to come home with him. He was living at the Miami Shores Motel. It was there that Thomas and Sanders took “provocative” photos of the girl, uploading them to the classifieds section on Backpage.com. Sparkle was advertised as the “new girl,” according to police reports.
Thomas and Sanders then forced the 13-year-old to become a prostitute. They gave her condoms and taught her how to speak with customers. They used drugs to keep Sparkle dependent on them — alcohol, marijuana and “Molly,” a form of MDMA. When johns came to the motel asking for her services, Thomas and Sanders charged them up to $100 per hour and counted the cash after every visit.
Once, when the two realized that some money was missing, they duct-taped the young girl and “threatened to kill her.”

NEWS ---Mom of CNN host Kate Bolduan to be sentenced for DUI accident

Nadine Bolduan, mother of Kate, will be sentenced April 11 for colliding with another car on an Indiana highway while intoxicated, but this isn’t the first time she’s faced such charges.

Nadine Bolduan, mother of CNN correspondent Kate Bouldan, could go to prison next month for driving while drunk and injuring a man.

A star reporter's dark family secret just crashed into the light.
Kate Bolduan, who at 29 is CNN's youngest host, may have a spotless record, but her mother does not.
While the rising star prepares to cozy up with former “Good Morning America” anchor Chris Cuomo over a fresh cup of coffee for a new morning show, her 60-year-old mother will need to confront her bleak past of reckless driving.

Kate Bolduan is a star reporter at CNN slated to co-host a brand new morning show.

Nadine Bolduan will be sentenced April 11 for crashing into another car on an Indiana highway and injuring its driver while drunk — but this is only the latest incident, reported local newspaper The Goshen News.

Bolduan means business! She will team up with Chris Cuomo and Michaela Pereira for her new show.

The collision killed Elizabeth Leman, 9, and severely injured Christa Konarski, 10, but the charges were later dismissed.
The following year, Nadine Bolduan faced civil lawsuits and ultimately had to pay the surviving child more than $1 million in a settlement. Her settlement with the Leman family, however, was not disclosed.
Nadine Bolduan's legal woes resurfaced May 31 last year when she admittedly drank two glasses of red wine and crashed her Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck nearly head on into a Buick LeSabre.

The driver, Paul D. Fought, was airlifted to a nearby hospital for leg fractures, head damage, a fractured elbow and a torn rotator cuff.
"The doctors were very concerned that I wouldn't make it through the first night," he told the Goshen News.
Nadine Bolduan's blood alcohol content was 0.19 percent, police said, which is more than double the state’s legal limit.
She pleaded guilty — with Fought present — to driving while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, which will limit her potential prison time to a maximum of one year.
"It was a bit overwhelming for me," Fought said, adding that the guilty plea was "all we could hope for."

SPORT NEWS -- Messi insists Liga goal streak is unimportant

The attacker is glad to have helped the Catalunya club thrive with his strikes in 19 successive Primera Division games, but regrets having dropped points against Celta on SaturdayLionel Messi has dismissed the importance of his goal streak and lamented Barcelona dropping points against Celta Vigo on Saturday evening.

The Argentine has scored in 19 successive Liga matches and his strike in the 2-2 draw with the Liga relegation candidates ensured he has scored against every opposition team - a feat Cristiano Ronaldo achieved last season, albeit not in a row.

"The least important thing is the streak," he told reporters after the match. "I was fortunate to score in all those games and help the team to keep on track.

"But that's not important. We wanted to win after the effort of the squad that were selected but we could not."

Although Tito Vilanova is not back to coaching the squad just yet, he is back with the team and Messi insisted it is fundamental to have the boss back around.

He said: "Tito seems very lively and it is very important that he is back with us."

Barca resume Champions League duties on Tuesday night at Paris Saint-Germain, and Messi is keen to recuperate ahead of what he perceives to be a potentially tricky quarter-final tie.

He added: "Now we have to rest to get fit and get a good result will be a meeting against a team we know are our equals."

SPORT NEWS -- Mourinho: Lopez could remain Madrid No.1

Mourinho: Lopez could remain Madrid No.1

The Portuguese acknowledged the potential selection headache he could face selecting his first-choice custodian, as captain Iker Casillas nears a return to action
Real Madrid trainer Jose Mourinho says Iker Casillas could find it hard to displace Diego Lopez upon his comeback from injury.

The winter arrival, signed in response to Casillas' bone fracture in January, has surpassed expectations in the skipper's absence, putting in a series of assured performances for los Blancos.

And Mourinho's acknowledgement of such has placed the Madrid captain's squad status in doubt, when he told reporters: "We must be honest. The way Diego is playing, it will be very hard to get him out of the net.

"I cannot say for certain that he will be stay there till the end of the season, but he is playing very well. For now, it will be difficult for Casillas to be on the bench against Galatasaray, but he will surely be there for Levante."

The Spanish champions drew 1-1 against Zaragoza on Saturday after Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out Rodri's early opener, prompting Mourinho to lament his team's scoring touch deserting them this season.

"It is true that all our players except Ronaldo have scored less goals this season, and therefore the team suffers," the 50-year-old continued.

"But I believe they will come, if not this season, then the next. It is not a matter of winning the league now, but to secure second place.

"Our goals remain the same; to progress to the Copa del Rey final and beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League."

NEWS --Gunmen kill school principal, injure 8 kids in Karachi

A Pakistani paramilitary soldier looks at a classroom following an attack by gunmen in Karachi on March 30, 2013.
Unidentified gunmen have attacked a primary school in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi, killing the principal of the school and injuring eight children, police officials say.

“The principal of (the Nation School) was killed and eight children were wounded when unknown gunmen fired at school gate …,” AFP quoted senior police official Imran Shaukat as saying on Saturday.

Reports say that the attackers fled on motorbikes.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Pakistani officials put the blame on pro-Taliban militants who have carried out similar assaults in the past.

Militants have carried out numerous attacks against civilians and managed to spread their influence in various regions of the country, despite frequent offensives by the Pakistani Army.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the United States in the so-called “war on terror.”

Thousands more have also been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy in the country.

NEWS--- Two shot in clashes in Kenya’s Kisumu

Kenyan policemen keep vigil on March 30, 2013 outside the Supreme Court in Nairobi where supporters of the Raila Odinga-led CORD alliance presidential candidate demonstrate.
Two people have been shot in clashes between police and the supporters of defeated Presidential candidate Raila Odinga in Kenya’s western city of Kisumu.

The incident took place on Saturday after the country’s Supreme Court declared Uhuru Kenyatta the valid winner of the disputed presidential election held on March 4.

Police officials confirmed that two people had been shot, after supporters of outgoing Prime Minister Odinga threw stones at police in Kisumu.

The election was "conducted in compliance with the Constitution and the law" and Kenyatta was "validly elected," said the court’s ruling read out by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.

The ruling came in response to a petition launched by Odinga. He had argued that the vote was marred by irregularities and that Kenyatta did not garner enough votes for an outright victory.

According to official results, Kenyatta won 50.07 percent of the vote, narrowly avoiding a runoff election against his challenger Odinga.

Kenyatta, the son of the country’s founding father Jomo Kenyatta, will be sworn in as the country’s president early next month.

Kenyatta, along with Deputy President-elect William Ruto, faces charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) over involvement in the 2007-08 post-election violence in which more than 1,000 people died.

NEWS --Jonathan to terrorists: 'Stop using religion to justify violence'

President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the use of religion to justify violence against Nigerians saying that to consolidate growth and prosperity as a nation, there is need for dialogue, understanding as well as appreciation of our differences.

Jonathan spoke in Sokoto yesterday at an international conference on 'Islam and Fundamentals of Peaceful Co-existence in Nigeria,'jointly organised by the Sokoto State Government and World Muslim League. From From left: Gov. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto State, Vice President Namadi Sambo, Secretary General, Muslim World League, Makkah-Saudi Arabia, Dr. Abdullahi Bin Abdul-Mushin Al-Turki and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar during the International Conference on Islam and the Fundamentals of peaceful co-existence in Nigeria in Sokoto yesterday.left: Gov. Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto State, Vice President Namadi Sambo, Secretary General, Muslim World League, Makkah-Saudi Arabia, Dr. Abdullahi Bin Abdul-Mushin Al-Turki and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar during the International Conference on Islam and the Fundamentals of peaceful co-existence in Nigeria in Sokoto yesterday.

Jonathan who was represented on the occasion by the Vice President, Mohammed Namadi Sambo, spoke against the backdrop of the violent campaign by the Boko Haram Islamic sect to impose Islam on the country and introduce Sharia as a way of life for the people.

This was just as the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar 111 lamented that, the problem in the country was not because we were different set of people but because we had deviated from  the true paths of such religions.

Jonathan said, 'We must do everything in our powers to ensure that religion is neither misused nor abused to justify violence. Our young people must be shielded from teachings which will take them down the path of violence and hatred.
'We have grown to respect and appreciate our faith and beliefs. We have also grown to acknowledge that our strength as individuals and as a nation lies in understanding and appreciating our differences. We cannot now relent. We must also guard against individuals who use faith as an excuse to emphasise our differences. Fundamental to this objective is the conduct and teachings of clerics and Imams at the grass root levels. Wherever misguided doctrines and sectarian bias may be introduced deliberately or in error, there should exist a monitoring or peer review mechanism by senior clerics, established organisations or well-meaning individuals to rectify such deviations in time without rancour.
'This is very important because the local clerics exert influence, especially on our children and the youth.'

He also said that the Federal government had continued to promote religious harmony 'by constantly engaging the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, jointly chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria and by taking their advice seriously.

'Through pragmatic ventures, such as the fast expanding indigent children programme, also known as the Almajiri Integrated Education Programme, the Federal Government, in partnership with state governments and Islamic organisations, is making progress in providing quality education at the grass-root and giving opportunity to every Nigerian to have good education.

'I call on all believers to reject religious-motivated violence, advance tolerance and promote mutual understanding. We must emphasise on the imperatives of dialogue as the bedrock of our efforts to sustain peace and advance development. Religion can and should be a fountain of solutions rather than a source of conflict,' he added.

Jonathan further stressed that Nigerians as individuals should not relent in understanding and appreciating their differences, pointing out that as a ,Nigerians had overcome several challenges in the past and moved forward with joint commitment for a better future, adding that, to consolidate growth and prosperity as a nation, dialogue, religious understanding and tolerance, rather than confrontation, must continue to guide citizens' collective and corporate existence.

The conference theme, he added, was not only relevant but represented the reinforcement of government's consistent efforts to promote inter-religious dialogue and harmony.

'It also greatly underscores our unwavering commitment to the stability and unity of our nation in the face of difficult security challenges in some parts of our country, perpetrated mostly under religious guise,' he added, and commended Sokoto State government and the World Muslim League for the joint initiative.
In his speech, Governor Magatakarda Wamakko stated that the conference was aimed at discussing peaceful co-existence in the country.

'The gathering vividly mirrors the invaluable sacrifices by our forefathers in the development of human civilisation and ensuring peaceful coexistence.
'We have no reason whatsoever to adopt violence in advancing any course. We both individually and collectively have the duty of upholding the tenets of our religion, which are all opposed to violence at all times,' Wamakko added, pointing out that dialogue and not violence  was prescribed in the Qur'an and Bible for both Muslims and Christians; and which the two world's most famous religions propagate.

Also speaking, Sultan Abubakar explained the reason for the conference as being aimed at peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims in the country.
Abubakar further spoke of the need for unity of Muslims regardless of sect. 'What we need is a strong purpose of commitment to the ideals of our major religions. As Muslims you must stand by the tenets and teachings of Islam. Let us do the right thing always.
'We have problems not because we are a different set of people. We have problems because we have deviated from the true paths of our religions as Muslims and Christians. We must go back to our books and follow the teachings of our leader and always do the right thing,' he said, even as the  Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Shehu Galadanchi stated that the conference was timely in view of the need for peaceful co-existence between adherents of different religions.

'Islam promotes security and this conference will find the best solution to the problem of insecurity.'
Furthermore, the Secretary General of the World Muslim League, Dr. Abdallah Al-Mohsen Al-Turki asked leaders to consider dealing with problems being faced by the people.
'Leaders should ponder on the major problems that are facing their followers and shun decisions that could endanger the lives of the people,' he said.

NEWS - green-meteorite-found-morocco-likely-mercury

Scientists studying a collection of 35 meteorites that landed in Morocco in 2012 say that a strange green rock among the group is likely from Mercury, rather than Mars or an asteroid,If they are correct, Meteorite NWA 7325 is the first known chunk of Mercury NWA 7325 has a lower magnetic intensity than other space rocks scientists have seen, Anthony Irving, a meteorite scientist from the University of Washington said at the 44th annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in the Woodlands, Texas, this month, according to Space.com.
The meteorite’s magnetic intensity most closely matches the low magnetism found on Mercury, which NASA’s Messenger spacecraft has measured, Irving said, according to Space.com. Furthermore, the space rock has a low iron content, and scientists believe Mercury’s surface is also low in iron.
to be identified on Earth. The green meteorite and the other space rocks it was found with are about 4.56 billion years old, Irving said.

Hudson, who recently did a guest stint on the TV series "Smash," also has a couple of new movie roles in the works. NEWS --- Rick Ross' Rape Rap & Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Clash

Rick Ross catches heat for some lyrics and issue an apology, while Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame have the weirdest week ever.
This week, Hip Hop fans reacted harshly to a line spit by Rick Ross on Rocko's  "U.O.E.N.O. (You Ain't even Know It)" alluding to rape. The line lead to a petition from fans, a radio station ban, and an attempted clarification by Ross. Lil Wayne appears as though he will impact the charts this week with the release of his I Am Not a Human Being II, which looks to land a top-five debut. Finally, Gucci Mane and Wacka Flocka continued to clash this week.

Fans & Radio React & Ross Clarifies

Rick Ross caught major heat for his lyric on Rocko's "U.O.E.N.O. (You Ain't even Know It)," where he raps, "Put molly all in her champagne, she ain't even know it / I took her home and enjoy that, she ain't even know it." As a result of the rhyme, a petition was created on Change.org calling for an apology from Ross. The bad PR continued when Michigan's WUVS 103.7 announced that it would be banning Ross (as well as Lil Wayne) for their recent controversial lyrics until they apologized for them. Ross attempted an apology on Friday (March 29th) by going onto Q 93.3, calling the situation a "misunderstanding."
"I want to make sure this is clear," said Rozay. "Woman is the most precious gift known to man, you understand? It was a misunderstanding with a lyric, a misinterpretation where the term rape wasn't used. I would never use the word rape in my records."

Lil Wayne's I Am Not A Human Being II To Debut At #2

Lil Wayne's I Am Not a Human Being II looks as though it will be the top Rap release in its first week out at #2. The album is projected to sell over 200,000 copies, while coming in second to Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience. "Clocking in at almost 20 songs (including all bonus cuts), I Am Not a Human Being II is excessively long, leaving room for missteps that pull the album in multiple directions," said HipHopDX in its review of the album. "Tunechi shines the brightest when he diverts from that formula, talking threats on 'Beat The Shit' with Gunplay who sort of steals the show with his gruff delivery or the simple Trap Rap found on 'Gunwalk' with Gudda Gudda."

Waka Flocka Flame & Gucci Mane Beef Intensifies, Gucci Arrested

After dropping Waka Flocka Flame from 1017 Brick Squad last week, Gucci Mane became the subject of various disses from Waka. Waka called out Gucci during Dipset's Diplomatic Immunity anniversary concert in New York, spitting "fuck that nigga Gucci.' Additionally, Waka went on MTV's RapFix Live this week, and vowed to never do business with Gucci ever again. Things got worse for Gucci, as the Georgia rapper was arrested for reportedly assaulting two people.

CELEBRITY NEWS -- Mathew Knowles Threatens To Sue The British Sun Over Article; Denies Dissing Jay-Z

20130328-121009.jpgBeyoncé’s father Mathew Knowles has responded to a shocking article published in The British Sun on March 25, which makes a number of allegations about a rift in the family. According to the article, Mathew Knowles admitted that he was devastated at being pushed out of his famous daughter’s life for Jay-Z.
The British Sun article claims that the 61-year-old has yet to meet his 14-month old granddaughter, Blue Ivy, Beyoncé’s child with husband, Jay-Z.
“This was not a normal ending of a business agreement,” Mathew Knowles allegedly told The British Sun. “This was a dad and a daughter and it was incredibly painful and it has some difficulties.”
In a statement released to AllHipHop.com, Mathew Knowles denied making certain statements in the interview, which is scheduled to run in The British Sun in its entirety, this Sunday.
“Mr. Knowles did not mention Jay-Z’s name in the interview at any point. He did not state that any ‘bitter rift’ exists between him and his daughter, Beyoncé or that he has been pushed or cut out of her life. He also never stated that he has not met his granddaughter Blue Ivy. When in fact, it has been well documented that he has met his granddaughter.”
According to Mathew Knowles’ rep, The British Sun and the reporter, Georgina Dickinson, were notified that he would not discuss family topics during the interview.
“The reporter and The British Sun misrepresented their intent, proceeded with a deceptive agenda, and created their own sensationalized stories filled with blatant lies and manipulative quotes, in efforts to grab headlines and sell more copies of their newspaper without regard to how their slander can damage lives,” Knowles’ rep said.
Mathew Knowles is demanding a full retraction, or he will proceed with legal action.
Check out Mathew Knowles’ response via his representative, below:
We did not initially respond to the claims made in the British Sun article released March 25, 2013 about Mathew Knowles because we believed that the inaccuracies published would be transparent to readers. However, the British Sun article is a prime example of libel and slander and irresponsible journalism, filled with lies, inaccuracies and misquotes. Many of the statements were completely untrue, without any substance whatsoever and were defaming, with malicious intent to attack Mathew Knowles and his family.
Specifically, Mr. Knowles did not mention Jay-Z’s name in the interview at any point. He did Not state that any “bitter rift” exists between him and his daughter, Beyoncé or that he has been pushed or cut out of her life. He also never stated that he has Not met his granddaughter Blue Ivy. When in fact, it has been well documented that he has met his granddaughter, a fact that was made clear on Beyoncé’s HBO documentary, seen around the world with him holding his granddaughter. A documentary that the British Sun reporter stated she watched, yet decided to report something that she knew was not true.
The British Sun and the reporter were notified in advance that Mathew would not discuss personal family topics or information. The reporter told Mathew that the interview was a feature on him, his career and what he is doing now. However, no information about his career was even included in the article released. As a result, the reporter and the British Sun misrepresented their intent, proceeded with a deceptive agenda, and created their own sensationalized story filled with blatant lies and manipulated quotes, in efforts to grab headlines and sell more copies of their newspaper without regard to how their slander can damage lives.
The publication of these fictitious statements have caused damage to Mr. Knowles’ personal and professional reputation as well as hurt his family. The office of Mathew Knowles has the complete, unedited recording of the interview and the full article that was supposed to be published, which discredits and proves the slanderous manipulation of lies and inaccurate quotes reported by the British Sun. This kind of irresponsible, malicious and misuse of journalism cannot be tolerated and we are requesting an immediate retraction by the British Sun or full legal action will proceed.

NEWS --tecfacebook-data-shows-picture-same-sex-marriage-support

Facebook
A map showing rate of profile picture changes by county; deeper red indicates more changes.
Noticed a lot of profile pictures changing this week on Facebook?Facebookwas a nationwide trend, as users on the social network responded to the Human Rights Campaign's request for them to substitute a red-and-pink equal sign for their profile photos in support of same-sex marriage, with the nation's highest court hearing two cases on the issue.

Human Rights Campaign
Facebook knows, of course, whenever someone changes their profile picture, and there's a normal daily rhythm for American users. But Facebook's investigation showed a huge bump in picture changes just after the Human Rights Campaign began its effort.
"While millions of U.S. Facebook users update their profile photos on a given day, we found that significantly more users — roughly 2.7 million (120 percent) more, updated their profile photo on Tuesday, March 26 compared to the previous Tuesday," notes Eytan Bakshy, a researcher on the Facebook Data Science Team, in the post.
Profile pic changes skyrocketed among younger users, especially those around the age of 30; teenagers and seniors didn't get quite as much into the spirit.
There were also some highly significant geographical trends, as illustrated by the map above. The darker the color of the country, the more people changed their profile picture. The most active county in the country was Washtenaw, in Michigan, home to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan — and the other most active counties also contained major colleges and universities
Facebook
Graph showing last week's picture update rates (black) and this week's (red).
As some commenting on the Facebook blog post have pointed out, there's no way to know whether all these profile picture updates were in support of gay marriage, since users could just as easily be changing their picture to indicate opposition to gay marriage (or just a new look). But the correlation with college towns and the deliberate and visible campaign by the Human Rights Campaign suggest that it was mostly supportive

NEWS--NIGERIA PARTY PDP crisis: Tukur under fresh fire

PDP crisis: Tukur under fresh fire
A fresh crisis is looming between the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, and some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party over plans to conduct a fresh election in the South-West into the office of the PDP National Secretary.
The proposed election will lead to the replacement of the sacked National Secretary of the party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Oyinlola was removed after a judgment delivered by Justice Abdu Kafarati of the Federal High Court Abuja on January 11, 2013.
Tukur had been quoted as saying: “The caretaker committee currently in place (in the South-West zone) will hold a fresh congress where a new secretary will be elected. It is a process and I can assure you that the office is not being taken away from the zone.”
Investigation, however, revealed that members of the NWC were shocked that Tukur made such a pronouncement in spite of the ongoing cases against the party at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.
A top NWC member said: “Some of us were shocked to read about the pronouncement of the National Chairman because we have not taken a decision to declare Oyinlola’s seat permanently vacant because there are many pending cases in court.
“Some of us will not be against any action that will be subjudice against the court process.
“I do not think we can be talking of reconciliation and at the same time be taking steps that are capable of complicating the crisis at hand.”
Another source in the NWC said: “This election is not a collective decision of the NWC. This is why our members have been calling for a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to resolve this kind of challenge.
“I think the National Leader of the party, President Goodluck Jonathan, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih, need to intervene and stop this plan to conduct election into the office of the National Secretary.
“And if you look at the constitution, it is the constitutional responsibility of the National Convention to elect National Secretary and not the Zonal Congress.
“I am also aware that there is a motion before the Federal High Court, Abuja where Oyinlola is seeking seven reliefs.”
In a Motion on Notice filed at the Federal High Court, Oyinlola sought seven reliefs, including an order to restrain the PDP from appointing a new National Secretary pending the determination of his appeal.
The reliefs are as follows:
“An order of stay of execution of the judgment delivered on the 11th day of January 2013 by this Honourable Court in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/504/2012 pending the hearing and determination of the appeal filed against it by the 1st Defendant/Applicant/Appellant.
“An order of injunction restraining the respondents by themselves, agents, servants, privies or otherwise from taking any step or further steps whatsoever to remove the applicant as the National Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pending the determination of the appeal filed and now pending in the Court of Appeal.
“An order of injunction restraining any member of PDP from assuming or further assuming the office of the National Secretary of PDP.
“An order of injunction restraining any member of the PDP from performing or further performing the functions of the National Secretary of the party pending the determination of the appeal filed and pending in the Court of Appeal.
“An order of injunction restraining the PDP from convening any Zonal Congress or National Congress of the party with a view to electing or selecting the National Secretary of the PDP pending the determination of the appeal filed and pending in the Court of Appeal.
“An order of injunction restraining the PDP from rectifying the records of the applicant/appellant by deleting name of the 1st defendant as the National Secretary of the 3rd respondent and replacing it with any other name.”
Also, the Osun Central chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, of acting against the constitution of the party.
As at press time, it was learnt that Oyinlola and some concerned members of the party might table the issue before the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih.
A party source added: “Oyinlola and other leaders from the South –West are seeking the intervention of Anenih and the BOT. Things are getting out of hands in the party. No one is happy at all.”
The Chairman of PDP in Osun Central Senatorial District, Rev. Bunmi Jenyo, yesterday said: “Alhaji Tukur himself knows that he and Prince Oyinlola as national officers of the party were products of the national convention.
“No zonal congress can elect a national officer of the party. If it is true he actually made that statement, I am sorry to say, he would be seen as deliberately working to undermine the party and subverting its constitution.
“The constitution of our party is very clear on how to elect a national officer of the PDP. The constitution says clearly that the entire country shall be the constituency of any aspirant to the party’s national offices. Are we to assume that our national chairman is unaware of the contents of our party on how he and other national officers were elected?
“Alhaji Tukur himself is a beneficiary of that provision of our constitution. When the North-East zone met before the last convention and said it had elected Babayo Shehu as its candidate for the national chairmanship, the party said no, that no zone had that power. If those at the party’s helm of affairs at that time had reasoned and acted as Tukur does now, he would not be our national chairman today. I strongly believe he was misquoted.
“The removal of Oyinlola is already being contested by him at the appeal court where he is arguing that he was elected by the national convention of the party and not at the zonal congress as held by a Federal High Court which ordered his removal.”
Meanwhile, Oyinlola has launched another attack against the leadership of the party as part of steps to regain his seat.
He has written a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. J.K. Gadzama, protesting alleged illegal advice he gave to the PDP, which led to his removal from office.
He also forwarded the protest letter to the Nigeria Bar Association, the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alooma Mukhtar, for the records.
He said Gadzama, who has been a long-time counsel to PDP, allegedly misled the party to ignore the ruling of a Court of Appeal to remove him from office.
He also queried why Gadzama has continued to represent him at the Court of Appeal, contrary to his wish.
In the letter, Ref.OO/34/34 and dated 26th March, 2013, Oyinlola insisted that Gadzama does not have his mandate to withdraw his case before the Court of Appeal.
He accused the counsel of allegedly violating the PDP constitution in connivance with Tukur.
The letter reads in part: “It sounds almost incredible that you could go ahead to advise the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to willfully disregard the ruling of the Court of Appeal, Lagos, which granted a stay of execution on the matter; but obey the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which delivered a contentious judgment that invalidated my election as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party.
“This is against all known established rules and regulations which are capable of lowering the estimation of the Nigerian Bar in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society all over the world. It also has the potential of creating credibility problems, not only for the Nigerian Judiciary, but also for the PDP and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
“Furthermore, it is interesting to note that you have in your correspondence cited above quoted profusely from the PDP constitution, the powers and functions of the National Chairman of the Party with intent to justify your curious position.
“I note, however, that out of the ordinary, you have failed to take cognizance of Chapter 1(7)1d which highlights the fact that PDP shall ‘’promote self-respect, self-reliance and human dignity.
“Curiously, you have turned a blind eye to the provisions of the same constitution, which prescribes the mode of elections of officers of the PDP, for you to be able to offer an untainted professional advice to the party.
“Rather, I am made to believe that you completely hijacked the functions of the National Legal Adviser of the PDP for the purpose of circumventing court rulings and proceedings.”
The embattled former governor insisted that he was legally elected as the National Secretary of PDP at the National Convention of the party, and not the South-West Zonal Congress.
The letter added: “For the avoidance of doubt, and I believe that you are very well aware, given your membership of the PDP, that all national officers of the party emerged at the national convention held on March 24, 2012.
“I wish to categorically point out that the South-West Zonal Congress of March 21, 2012, on which the learned judge rested his pronouncement did not put forward Olagunsoye Oyinlola as the adopted candidate of the zone for the position of the National Secretary.
“I applied like other interested candidates and was certified eligible to contest for election into the position of National Secretary by the National Headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party. This position is sacrosanct and ordinarily ought to earn me the support of the PDP since I was never called to question over actions taken on the Ogun State PDP crises.
“Besides, I hold the view that PDP is vicariously liable for all actions I took while in office as the National Secretary. Not once did I take any unilateral decision in line with my preference for due process in the administration of the PDP national headquarters.
“To refresh your memory and to point out the deliberate violation of the PDP constitution which you have actively encouraged in connivance with Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, let me recall that two (2) suits (FHC/L/CS/347/2012 of 27th April, 2012 and FHC/CS/282/2012) filed by the Plaintiffs at the Federal High Court had nullified the South-west Zonal Congress; from which the Plaintiffs erroneously claimed the PDP National Secretary emerged.
“However, convinced that the suits were an abuse of court process, the PDP challenged the decision of the Federal High Court at the Court of Appeal. The ruling of the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division in CA/35/2 delivered on June 25, 2012, declared that the Learned Trial Judge at the Federal High Court erred in Law by admitting the Plaintiffs averments and further granted a Stay of Execution.
“Satisfied that the Defendants (including my humble self) had merit in our averments, the Court of Appeal, Lagos Judicial Division, in its ruling delivered on the 25th June, 2012, granted us a Stay of all Proceedings predicated on Suit No: FHC/L/CS/1241/11. In normal situations, the ruling of the Federal Court of Appeal must take precedence over that of a Federal High Court. I need not point out the implication of this development to you.
“I attach herewith, for purpose of clarity and compliance with my request, my earlier letter to you dated 7th March, 2013 and your Frank Egboh’s letter to me dated Tuesday, March 19, 2013; which I am sure he must have forwarded to you as your employee/partner; and for whose actions you are vicariously liable.
“Please permit me to inform you, out of expediency, that I am forwarding copies of these letters to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Aloma Mukhtar (GCON), who is also the Chairman of the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee; the President of the Nigeria Bar Association, as well as the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the Nigerian Bar, for purposes of their record, and possible further necessary action.
“Please note that if either your good self or your firm persists in imposing yourself as my lawyer without my consent, with the apparent immoral and mischievous intention of terminating my appeal and curtailing my constitutional right to appeal, I will immediately seek redress from the appropriate institutions saddled with the responsibility of protecting our noble and revered profession

NEWS --Kenya’s Supreme Court upholds Kenyatta’s poll victory

Kenya’s Supreme Court ruled on Saturday Uhuru Kenyatta was elected president fairly, unanimously rejecting a challenge from defeated candidate Raila Odinga that the vote was marred by rigging and technical problems.
Reuters reports that the decision cleared the way for Kenya’s richest man to take the top job in east Africa’s biggest economy, but left foreign powers with the headache of dealing with a leader charged with crimes against humanity at The Hague.
Kenya’s outgoing president had called for calm ahead of the judgment which came five years after another ballot dispute triggered widespread bloodshed.
“It is the decision of the court that the third and fourth respondents were validly elected,” Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said in court, referring to Kenyatta and his running mate and deputy president William Ruto.
He said the court had done its duty at a historical moment.
“It is now for the Kenyan people, their leaders, civil society, the private sector and the media to discharge (their duty),
Odinga challenges election results in Supreme Court
to ensure that the unity, peace, sovereignty and prosperity of the nation is preserved,” he added.
After a week of hearings, the court had unanimously decided the March 4 vote was conducted in a free, fair and credible manner in line with the constitution, he said.
Many ordinary Kenyans have insisted they will not allow a repeat of the violence that killed more than 1,200 people and hammered the economy following a dispute over the last election in 2007.
Meanwhile, Odinga has accepted the ruling of the Supreme Court which dismissed his challenge to the presidential election result, and wished Kenyatta well.
“The court has now spoken,” Odinga told a news conference. “I wish the president-elect, honourable Uhuru Kenyatta, and his team well.”

At least 10 people have been injured Egypt's second largest city Alexandria and capital Cairo after clashes broke out between anti-government protesters and Muslim Brotherhood supporters.

President Mohamed Morsi’s supporters and opponents clash outside the presidential palace, in Cairo, Egypt. (File photo) On Friday, the protesters confronted each other in Alexandria's Sidi Gaber district near Muslim Brotherhood offices, AFP reported.

Nine people were hurt and taken to hospital after the two sides started pelting each other with stones and Molotov cocktails.

Security forces were called to the area where they used tear gas to disperse the two sides.

One person was also injured at a demonstration outside Cairo's High Court. The protesters were demanding the resignation of the current prosecutor general Talaat Abdallah, who was appointed by President Mohamed Morsi in December.

On March 27, an Egyptian court overturned Morsi's decision to sack former prosecutor general Abdel Meguid Mahmoud and ordered his reinstatement.

The opposition has accused Morsi of using his power to promote the interests of the Muslim Brotherhood.

NEWS --Iraq, Afghan wars will cost US up to $6 trillion, Harvard study saysThe US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will cost American taxpayers $4 trillion to $6 trillion in the long run, according to a new study by the Harvard University.

The report that was released on Thursday has taken into account the medical care of injured war veterans and expensive repairs to US military force worn out by over a decade of fighting, The Washington Post reported.

Linda J. Bilmes, a public policy professor, wrote in the report, “As a consequence of these wartime spending choices, the United States will face constraints in funding investments in personnel and diplomacy, research and development and new military initiatives.”

“The legacy of decisions taken during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars will dominate future federal budgets for decades to come,” Bilmes noted.

She said that years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan have already cost Washington $2 trillion, which is only a fraction of the ultimate price tag.

Adding to costs will be the interest Washington will have to pay for borrowing to fund the wars, Bilmes stated.

In 2003, the US and Britain invaded Iraq in blatant violation of international law and under the pretext of finding weapons of mass destruction. But no such weapons were ever found in Iraq.

More than one million Iraqis were killed as the result of the US-led invasion and subsequent occupation of the country, according to the California-based investigative organization Project Censored.

In 2001, the US and its allies invaded Afghanistan as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban regime from power, but insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan, despite the presence of about over 100,000 US-led troops.

According to the United Nations, thousands of Afghan civilians have died and hundreds of thousands more displaced during a more than 11-year long war.

NEWS -- US warns North Korea of increased isolation if threats escalate further White House says US will not be intimidated by 'bellicose rhetoric' and is fully capable of defending itself and its allies

The White House warned North Korea on Friday that the rapidly escalating military confrontation would lead to further isolation, as the Pentagon declared that the US was fully capable of defending itself and its allies against a missile attack.
After North Korean leader Kim Jong-un declared that rockets were ready to be fired at American bases in the Pacific – a response to the US flying two nuclear-capable B2 stealth bombers over the Korean peninsula this week – the White House blamed Pyongyang for the increased tensions.
"The bellicose rhetoric emanating from North Korea only deepens that nation's isolation. The United States remains committed to safeguarding our allies in the region and our interests that are located there," deputy press spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters travelling with Barack Obama on Air Force One to Miami.
Asked if the joint US-South Korean military exercises and the use of the stealth bombers had fuelled the escalation, Earnest replied: "It's clear that the escalation is taking place from the North Koreans based on their rhetoric and on their actions."
The Pentagon said on Friday that the US would not be intimidated, and was ready to defend both its bases and its allies in the region. Lt Col Catherine Wilkinson, a Pentagon spokesperson, said the US would not be intimidated. "The United States is fully capable of defending itself and our allies against a North Korean attack. We are firmly committed to the defence of South Korea and Japan," she said.
Secretary of state John Kerry will visit the region in a week or so for meetings with Japan, China and South Korea, the State Department said.
North Korea announced that its forces had been placed on high alert on Tuesday but the threats became graver when a picture was published of Kim reiterating the order at an emergency meeting on Friday.
The US Defense Department keeps secret its assessment of the distance North Korea's missiles can reach. But Admiral James Winnefeld, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said a fortnight ago it had one type of missile capable of reaching the US.
But while defence analysts agreed that while North Korea is theoretically capable of firing a missile, they expressed scepticism about whether its technology is as advanced as it claims and were doubtful about the accuracy in hitting targets.
But there is more concern than usual in Washington compared with previous standoffs with North Korea because Kim is a new leader, young and inexperienced and a largely unknown quantity in the west.
A major worry is that if North Korea was to attack a South Korean ship – it was blamed for the sinking a South Korean vessel in 2010 – or a land target, Seoul has said that it would retaliate this time.
Wilkinson said: "North Korea's bellicose rhetoric and threats follow a pattern designed to raise tensions and intimidate others. DPRK will achieve nothing by threats or provocations, which will only further isolate North Korea and undermine international efforts to ensure peace and stability in north-east Asia.
"We continue to urge the North Korean leadership to heed President Obama's call to choose the path of peace and come into compliance with its international obligations."
She added: "We remain committed to ensuring peace and stability on the Korean peninsula. This means deterring North Korean aggression, protecting our allies and the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. The United States will not accept North Korea as a nuclear state; nor will we stand by while it seeks to develop a nuclear-armed missile that can target the United States."
At a Pentagon briefing on Thursday, defence secretary Chuck Hagel said: "There are a lot of unknowns here. But we have to take seriously every provocative, bellicose word and action that this new, young leader has taken so far since he's come to power."
Mark Fitzpatrick, director of the non-proliferation and disarmament programme of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, played down the threat. "North Korea is upping its rhetoric to a world-class level, but it's still just rhetoric. They have no capability to hit the US mainland with anything – except through cyberspace. Their only tested missiles can fly a maximum of 1,600km, less than half the distance to Guam."
Fitzpatrick, who is scheduled to lead a thinktank discussion at the institute's Washington office next Thursday on whether the US policy of patience has run its course and instead it should pursue reunification of the Korean peninsula, said Friday that while North Korea is limited in its ability to hit US targets, it poses a threat to South Korea and Japan.
"Their Scuds and Nodongs can hit anywhere in South Korea and Japan. Using them would be suicidal, of course. The far more likely scenario is a pin-prick attack in the nature of the 2010 attacks. This time, however, South Korea is determined to respond with an eye for an eye, in order to restore deterrence. North Korea's ensuing response could trigger a larger conflagration."
Jim Walsh, a specialist on security and nuclear weapons at MIT, played down the prospect of an attack on the US, but said: "The reason it is scary is: you can get war even when no one intends to have a war. All the sides – South Korea, North Korea and others – are now leaning into each other, and if someone makes a mistake, I am concerned that that mistake will escalate into something larger than anyone expected.
"Suddenly you have a young man in a closed country who has to decide whether he is going to respond to your actions."
The risk was not of a North Korean attack on the US but on South Korea that would bring in the US, he said.
Walsh, who has visited North Korea and has had talks with its officials in Switzerland, Sweden and the US, said the present confrontation felt different because of the harsher rhetoric from North Korea, the secret defence pact agreed by the US and South Korea and the US military drills this week.
"If we are lucky it will all be bluster on everyone's side. That is the good outcome," Walsh said. "The bad outcome is that it is bluster until someone screws up and then war happens."
Michael O'Hanlon, one of the leading military analysts in the US, expressed worries that the US approach of tit-for-tat and imposition of additional permanent sanctions after its third nuclear test could exacerbate the situation. Like Walsh, he sees this confrontation as being different from previous ones.
In an email, O'Hanlon, a security specialist at Washington's Brookings Institution, told the Guardian: "I favour temporary sanctions in response to the third nuclear test, to give Pyongyang an incentive not to provoke again." He argues that by setting a time-limit such as two, three or four years, it could encourage North Korea not to conduct another nuclear test.
"I am talking about automatic sunset provisions with a specific time frame, unless of course there is another nuclear test or another act of violence," O'Hanlon wrote.
