Meet The 17-Year-Old Who Cannot Vote But Is Leading HK's Pro-Democracy Movement

His name is Joshua Wong. He is only 17 and cannot vote. But he is at the forefront of a student movement for democracy in Hong Kong.

This is Joshua Wong, a 17-year-old a student leader, who, although too young to drive or buy a drink in a bar – let alone vote, has become the face of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

Already a veteran activist, Wong got his start in 2011, when he and fellow students founded a group called "Scholarism." And this past week, he played a pivotal role in setting off the protests.

While China calls him an "extremist," a party document on national security identifies him by name as a threat to internal stability, Wong, who is trying to lead his country through a social revolution movement, has had an immediate impact on Hong Kong politics.

Wong, who comes across as a hybrid of a solemn politician and a bashful teenage sensation, with his defiant statements on the protests, have catapulted into the media spotlight.

According to Chen Yun-chung, an associate professor of cultural studies at Lingnan University in Hong Kong, Wong and his generation of high school activists, combining idealism and organisational skills, had outflanked both the government and the older, more cautious generations of democrats in Hong Kong.

While Wong represents a "culture of resistance that is idealistic and very persistent among the high school students," few expected him to have such an impact on events this past week.

Wong was held by police for more than 40 hours until Sunday evening, when he was released "unconditionally," after the city's high court approved an application filed by his lawyers.

Wong, who has said that he acquired his passion for politics from his parents, said he has no plans to leave Hong Kong to study overseas, even if he were offered the opportunity to.

On Saturday, the Occupy Central Movement joined the rally with peaceful sit-ins at government headquarters and financial districts.

Things took a turn for the worst when Hong Kong's authorities crack down with surprising force, leading to chaos. 

Hong Kong government says citizens should accept the deal of election reform offered by Beijing where the Chinese government will first approve the candidates.

The China Central Government has condemned the protest, saying that openly nominating candidates would create chaos.

At first, seen as a backlash against Emma for her powerful speech at UN, it now appears the whole stunt was just that: a stunt!

After Emma Watson delivered a speech at the United Nations on 20 September about gender equality, there were reports that 4chan users threatened to leak nude photos of Emma on a site called EmmaYouAreNext.com.

Well, the whole thing actually turned out to be a viral marketing stunt by a site calling itself Rantic Marketing. Rantic is claiming that it wants to shutdown 4chan, but, as Mashable reports, the "social media marketing enterprise" may itself just be a hoax.

While an attempt by Mashable to reach out to Rantic via the email address on Rantic's website failed, Business Insider attributes Rantic to "the most notorious gang of pranksters on the Internet"

In an open letter addressed to Barack Obama, Rantic states:

Rantic lists "Brad Cockingham" as its CEO and founder. According to Business Insider, rantic.com website is another stunt, just like the fake Emma countdown timer. Rantic Marketing is a fake company run by a gang of prolific Internet spammers used to quickly capitalise on Internet trends for page views.

As New York Magazine points out, convincing the Internet that anonymous men would punish women with sexual and violent threats turns out to be remarkably easy, and that's because it's completely within the realm of possibility

Horrifying incident marks a different kind of deadly caused by the Ebola virus.

Eight officials, five health workers and three journalists, who went to a remote village in Guinea to raise awareness about the Ebola virus were killed by the villagers there.

Gripped by the fear of the Ebola epidemic, the villagers attacked the officials claiming that they had come to spread the disease. The delegation was distributing information about Ebola when a group of angry and fearful villagers began throwing rocks and beating them with clubs.

Three days later, the bodies were found in the septic tank of a primary school in the village. Three of them had their throats slit. A spokesman for Guinea's government says the group had gone on a mission to sensitise the local population about Ebola but instead, they were killed in cold blood.

During the attack, several officials managed to escape the mob and alert their colleagues in the capital of Guinea, Conarky. One journalist and a five-year-old boy who is the son of a sub-prefect survived by fleeing into bushes. The deadly Ebola outbreak has caused widespread fear and panic. Villagers in Guinea have been threatening workers and officials with knives, stones and machetes.

Malaysia carmaker Proton has revealed a little teaser for its upcoming car dubbed the Proton Iriz through their microsite.

According to popular car enthusiast website Paultan.org, the headlights in the car are said to be using halogen bulbs due to the yellow tinge of the light.

Besides that, the Iriz will be equipped with six airbags for the premium model. The picture also shows the positioning of the gear and the spacing between the back and front seats.

On the entertainment front, the Iriz is said to include built-in navigation maps, a touch screen for your media, and bluetooth

The Iriz is also equipped with a reverse camera with superimposed lines to guide the driver, to ensure that parking is a breeze

The Malaysia car maker is also including a keyless driving system for the premium models of the Iriz

One of the main attraction of the vehicle is the safety. It has achieved a 5-star rating on the ANCAP crash test.

The Proton Iriz is said to come in three variants and will be powered by a 1.3L or a 1.6L engine.

As with the appointment of the man behind the coup, General Prayuth Chan-ocha as country's Prime Minister, it now seems Thailand will (unofficially) continue to remain under the Military Rule.

The 60-year-old General Prayuth Chan-ocha was nominated on Thursday in a legislature hand-picked by Thailand's junta and made up of mostly military and police figures. The General was the head of the army when he led a dramatic coup in May.

The Bangkok Post quoted the General as saying he was not approached before he was nominated. He did not attend the National Legislative Assembly session where he was nominated and voted in as Thailand's 29th Prime Minister.

The National Legislative Assembly's choice is expected to be approved by King Bhumibol Adulyadej later.

Prayuth's appointment will help him remain influential in Thai politics following his mandatory retirement from the Thai army later this year. Having been formally appointed as the Prime Minister, Prayuth can rule unimpeded until Thailand returns to party-based politics. The new government is expected to stay in power until the fall of 2015, when a general election is tentatively scheduled to take place

How successful General Prayuth is going to be, will depend on how skilfully he uses the formidable hand he now holds. While critics say he is abrupt and impatient, with deeply conservative outlook, fans describe him as decisive, and a good listener.
